Keeping NFT.Storage Operational and Advancing Our Mission
NFT.Storage has always been dedicated to supporting NFT creators and developers by providing decentralized storage solutions for digital assets. As we continue pursuing this mission, we are transitioning NFT.Storage from NFT.Storage Ltd back to the PL Filecoin Impact Fund (PLFIF), which funds projects that support and enhance the Filecoin network’s utility.
This transition is focused on keeping our existing products operational while continuing our work on NFT preservation and accessibility.
What This Means for NFT.Storage Classic Users
NFT.Storage Classic is the original free storage offering that allowed users to upload NFT data, which was then made available across the IPFS network via the NFT.Storage Gateway and backed up in the Filecoin network.
For users of NFT.Storage Classic, all previously uploaded data will continue to be stored and accessible across IPFS and in the Filecoin Network. However, over time, there may be some degradation in latency and availability. While the data itself is preserved, users may experience slower retrieval speeds.
Long-Term Storage Will Continue with Lighthouse
Our NFT.Storage long-term storage product was designed to provide verifiable, endowment-backed NFT preservation for offchain data, allowing users to pay a one-time fee to back-up their offchain NFT data in the Filecoin network. This product aims to ensure data is placed into long-term decentralized storage, with funding secured through an onchain endowment—developed in collaboration with Lighthouse.Storage
This product will remain operational and continue accepting new backups. The endowment will continue covering storage costs, with Lighthouse.Storage maintaining and improving core functionality.
NFT.Storage Checker: Now Open Source
Originally developed as a commercial product, the NFT.Storage Checker is designed to provide transparency around offchain NFT data by verifying where metadata and assets are stored. With the transition of NFT.Storage, we have decided to release this project as an open-source project on GitHub.
By making the NFT.Storage Checker open source, we aim to empower the community to explore and extend its functionality. Developers, marketplaces, wallets and other community members can extend it to track, verify, and build better offchain storage visibility for NFTs.
We encourage anyone interested to explore the project, contribute improvements, and find new ways to integrate it into the broader NFT ecosystem. Check out the new API here: https://github.com/nftstorage/NFT.Storage-Flagship-Preservation-Public-Good

NFT.Storage Ltd. and the NFT.Storage Membership Community are Winding Down
NFT.Storage Ltd., the company formed to focus on the long-term preservation and accessibility of NFTs as a public good, will be winding down. The NFT.Storage Membership Community will wind down with it. We’re excited that we experimented with new ideas for how to fund these community archives sustainably, but unfortunately the model didn’t work this time.
Remaining funds will go towards keeping our products operational to further our mission of preserving NFTs and keeping them accessible long-term.
Looking Ahead
NFT.Storage's transition to the PL Filecoin Impact Fund reflects our commitment to keeping NFT storage reliable and accessible. While some aspects of our service are evolving, our goal remains the same: supporting long-term NFT preservation and making it easier for creators, developers, and collectors to store and retrieve their digital assets securely.
